Even though strawberry season (in the grocery store) starts in March here in Colorado, I am always delighted to find juicy, plump, ripe strawberries in late June.
Since strawberries are one of my all-time favorite fruits, I wanted to share my favorite salad recipe with them in it.
Do you know how to choose the sweetest strawberries?
It is all done with your sniffer!! Yep, sniff those strawberries in their package. Is their fragrance that of a ripe berry? Then you have got a good batch. If they don't have any smell to them or are plain bland smelling, then put them back on the shelf.
Next summer, I plan to get my strawberry crop going in my garden. There is nothing better than growing your own fruits and vegetables in your garden.
I am salivating just thinking about them now!
Funny side story. When I was about ten years old, we had a pretty significant strawberry crop at our house. Yet somehow there were never any berries on the vine. Come to find out (after my sister and I were accused of eating them all) that our Chihuahua was the guilty one. My dad caught him red-handed. Or, in this case, red-nosed. ha-ha
I genuinely wish strawberries, raspberries and, blackberries grew all year long where we live. But unfortunately, in Colorado, that isn't the case. So I will enjoy eating them as long as summer allows.
I hope you enjoy this salad as a main course or side dish for any of your favorite summertime meals.
